A Nation Rises Like a Lion
When he spoke to us in Washington, DC, Prime Minister Netanyahu quoted the following passage as the source of their name for the “Operation Rising Lion.”
[Operation Rising Lion was the military operation which began July 13, 2025, in which Israel targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities and the military and scientific leaders responsible for the nuclear program in Iran.]
This weekend, Jews around the world read the Torah episode of Balaam ben Beor—the infamous unholy prophet who was hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse the Israelites.
The inscription found in Jordan in an archeological dig that reads, “This is the book of Balaam, son of Beor …” The first is an actual picture of the find; the second is a transcription of the inscription.
In 1967, an inscription was dug up in Deir ‘Alla, Jordan, dated to 825 BCE. In it, Balaam is mentioned explicitly:
“This is the book of Balaam, son of Beor, a seer of the gods. To him came the gods at night. And they spoke to him according to the utterance of El, and they spoke to Balaam, son of Beor, thus: …”
This find rocked the archaeological world, as it was a non-biblical, non-Jewish source corroborating the Torah and confirming the existence of ‘Balaam ben Beor’ as a regionally recognized pagan prophet.
Balaam, instead of cursing the Israelites, was coerced by God to bless their camp no less than 3 times.
Balaam’s second non-consentual blessing, as recounted in the book of Numbers (ch. 23), contains the verse from which the name of Operation Rising Lion was derived.
